As posted already, it is combination of genetics and diet. Even in the USA if one looks back a few generations, you find that people were shorter on average due to the poorer diet.

We must remember, though, that height is not an indication of good health. When Asians come to the US and adopt our diet they also die at our rate.

no the people were shorter before they started to become more westernized and started eating the american GMO foods. this is why the asian people started becoming taller.

This is true and not just about asian countries either. People in the past in America actually had better diets and the fast food portions were smaller than they are now where everything is jumbo size. People live longer with good eating habits, excercise, and modern and homeopathic medicine which people in past generations lacked.

I'm in South Korea and Koreans are definitely pretty tall. I'm about 5'10 and many adult Koreans are as tall as me or almost as tall, including the women. Not many are taller though, unlike in the US where lots of guys are taller than me.

One of the biggest shocks I had moving to Korea was the height of Korean men my age. I'm 5'9" and I would say I am at best average height here, more realistically a bit below the average height for my generation. But it wouldn't be unusual to find a bus full of the 70+ crowd without a single person being much above 5".
