Going to Japan next year to fulfill one of my lifelong dreams.

While there, I'm planning on visiting temples, experiencing great landscapes and gardens, seeing some contemporary and edo-period art, hearing hearing some traditional music and buying their legendary pornography.

Would like to find information on fulfilling the first 4.. Thanks

Plenty of information on the net. I find the trip advisor forums very helpful for specific info.

I agree with The Postman.

There are a million websites devoted to exactly those types of questions, and every bookstore has sections of Japan for tourism and tourists.

I lived in Japan for 5 1/2 years, and could certainly give a bunch of generic places to such a generic question, and spent an hour or three doing so. But, what's the point, when any book or website will have even more information.

Okay, I'll bite.

Visiting temples - They are everywhere. You could fly into Narita Airport, and take the train just a few stops outside of the Airport, and there is a Temple right there. You could do that on a layover.

Experiencing landscapes - take any train in Japan.

Contemporary and Edo-Period Art. Go to a museum.

Hear traditional music. Go to youtube, or look online for concerts.

Buy Japan pornography - go to any 7-11 or convenience store in Japan. You could also look online.

I think you can find a lot of them in Shinjuku, particularly in Kabukicho (eastern side of Shinjuku train station). Akihabara is better known for electronics shops.

Temples, Gardens, Art and Porn, baby!

Thank guys yeah I definitely have been looking up this stuff on google, before and after posting. Just wanted to see what people on here that had been there had to say. Not surprisingly, you guys have more knowledge of Japanese porn than anything else. I'll bring back a dvd each for you guys, no worries. You guys get the cheap isht tho.

I'm partial to the Kyoto area over Tokyo. Tokyo has modern Japan with sprinklings of the past but Kyoto (and nearby Nara) ARE the history of Japan. Simply taking a stroll around Kyoto will give you both the past and the present. The temples are numerous and you can simply follow the tourists to get the major ones, but do try to get off the beaten path (find the roadside buddhas!).

Try out the Nishiki marketplace. Tons and tons of mom and pop shops (and some larger chains too) selling everything from wedding photos (my wife and I actually stopped in to get our photos taken with kimono ... indoors as it was raining but whatever, it was an experience!) to organic rice and fish and arcades and tourist stuff. It is simply huge... do bring a map.

Also, do take a taxi to some of the more remote villages (or pay $5.50 for a looooong and likely crowded bus ride). Some of the history in that area will blow your mind.

If you're stuck on Tokyo, I'm partial to the Imperial palace, nearby the Tokyo station, and Ginza (for the bars, though the upscale shops are something else too, if you don't mind seeing watches that are worth more than 1/5 your annual salary, or MORE). If you're a young'in, you can club till midnight (the official government closing time for clubs) in Roppongi or Shinjuku. Akihabara, as pointed out, if more for electronics, maid cafes, otaku culture (anime/manga), and yes, porn. My last visit to akiba I saw a LOT more porn shops. I'm thinking they're getting kinda brazen with some of it (one place was openly selling some rather um, "unrated" stuff ... use your imagination, then make it worse). I wonder how much longer the cops will let this go on until they start cleaning up the place for the Olympics. It's not quite the level of the Kabukicho in it's 90s seediness, but some of the side streets are getting there.

Do try the Golden Gai area. You'll think you're warped into a drinker's heaven.

My heavens, a lot of my advice centers around alcohol! I'm surprised I remembered some of those times ... half of my time was spent in Japan in a drunken haze.

Other places I recommend: Tokyo Skytree for the view, Yokohama for its Chinatown,

Lol I'm no fan of Japanese porn tbh honest with you, I just heard something about Akihabara having a lot of those sex/porn shops, as well as another place, can't remember the name.
