Seoul is a interesting city to visit and I would recommend it. Our of the four mentioned, it is just my personal preference/bias that I prefer the other 3 over Seoul.

I am a native English speaker, and so, with the locals in Seoul speaking little English, it was difficult to get around. I have visited Seoul several times on business trips also, and always needed to have a local translator/interpreter/guide.

Have a pleasant trip!

Not to sound like an Internet traveler but I'm considering visiting Seoul and Singapore because I have seen Tokyo and Hong Kong. I toured Seoul on google maps and their was not much variation of the neighborhoods, everything looked the same.

Thanks for the response, I enjoy your post.

Were you able to see the Seoul skyline from an observation deck or get any aerial views? What was your opinion of the Seoul skyline after seeing it in person?

The best view that I have seen of the Seoul skyline was from a top floor bar at the Imperial Palace Hotel in Gangnam-gu. All I saw were high rises and snow on the roofs. It was in January.

As a previous expat in Seoul for many years, you definitely want to have a fellow expat show u around Seoul.

I use to recommend foreigner friends to meet up with Korean acquientences to be shown around, but noticed Koreans want to bring them to places like malls and whatever other things they associate as western.

The best of Korea is in the Korean things. Eating galbi in the street while drinking soju, etc.

Airport Cleanliness
Incheon has been voted best airport for the past 5 years by skytrax, followed by Chep Lok and Changi! So Seoul/Hong Kong/Singapore Ties, then Japan

Architecture
I love Traditional Japanese Architecture and Hong Kong/Singapore both have awesome modern structure, then Seoul last

Culture
All are cool but for me Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore in that order

Food
Japan and Korea are the only asian countries with a michelen guide specific to them? if that matters to you that is.

Neighborhoods
Seoul/Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore (very sterile)

Nightlife
Seoul! (Koreans party harder then any of the others) Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore

Safety
All are Safe

Transportation
All are great! Tokyo's is massive along with Seoul's.

Some Seoul Pics skyline, streetscape and some party scenes for ya since you seem interested. Sorry if it's too much (I would recommend you upgrade your connection) I would also recommend not taking Tiger Beer's recommendations on Seoul, his references remind me of Seoul in the early 90's or that his friends were not quite the "cool" kid's so he didn't get introduced to the more "in" things.
Out of the 4 I enjoyed Hong Kong and Seoul the most, they are the most organic and "Real" cities IMO out of the four..
Singapore and Tokyo were a bit bland for me especially Singapore, but then again I come from NYC so maybe I prefer a little grit in my cities and some edge to my people =)

I've been to Japan and Korea. Tokyo is much more sophisticated then Seoul in every aspect apart from 'Airport Cleanliness' maybe. I would probably go to Japan during Cherry Blossom season.

I have not been to any of these cities, but would like to first visit Tokyo and Hong Kong based on personal interest.

63 Tower on Yeouido Island or Seoul North Tower, Seoul is a bit of a jumbled mess really, there are tall buildings everywhere, most of them boring looking apartment blocks, with multiple smaller areas of the shining skyscrapers you associate with business districts.

Seoul is constructed in a valley of sorts, and the Northern part of the city is built around several mountains, which obstruct your view a bit. In short the view is no where near as nice as the one you get on top of the peak in Hong Kong (if you are lucky enough to get a low air pollution day that is). Air pollution is a big problem if your trying to get a birds eye view of any big Asian city really, sometimes its not even worth the effort.

I am surprised for the lack of votes for Tokyo. I assumed Tokyo would have been fighting it out for number one with Hong Kong but instead are a distant second. I think this is because Hong Kong skyline is so famous.

Honestly, I started this thread to see how HK and Tokyo compare to the lesser well known Seoul and Singapore and to see if they were worth a visit. I can't decide if Seoul or Singapore is worth my money.
