What is meant by important? Mere number of speakers? Or as an international means of communication? Most Asian languages are pretty much limited to the respective countries. Who speaks Japanese outside Japan? Or Korean outside the Koreas?

I think English is the most important language in Asia.

The only Asian language I am interested in personally is Tamil.

2. Arabic
3. Mandarin-Cantonese
4. Hindi-Urdu

English is the defacto lingua franca of the world.

But it is not important. In Brazil there is a big Japanese expat community. But they might as well speak Portuguese only without any problems. Nor does a Thai need to speak Japanese, there is just no point in learning it.
