I'm asking for a friend: He'd be paid USD working for a US based company. Would he be allowed to work remotely living long term from Hong Kong?

Is it one of those cases where it's technically illegal but very hard to get caught, or is it perfectly legal?

About like Thailand.....technically, doing your own laundry could be a violation of labor laws...people have been managing their brokerage accounts here for decades, but don't have an office or tell others your business...and don't ever expect a visa by telling them you work remotely, let alone a work permit. Most have trouble just getting a visa...what you do on your own computer in your own place isn't a problem, with few exceptions; porno, anti-government, promoting sins....

Your question is not really a question.

I am a HK person.

If he or she has the right to live long term in Hong Kong, the answer is yes.

If not, no.

And internet forums are not good places to get advices on these situations.

There are many westerners who are staying illegally in Thailand, pretty rare this happen in a developing country. They can't get a legal visa to live in Thailand long term. Most are attracted by the weather, food, cheap costs and normal women there, but can't find a legal way to stay there long term, or do not have the money or qualification to get a long term visa.
