Ok, but how many South Koreans are actually getting plastic surgery? Is it mostly people that live in Seoul who would consider getting work done?

Alot, but mostly people in Seoul surrounding areas. Some come from Busan, but not much. Many foreigners come to Korea for plastic surgery too. Many from other parts of Asia and Latin America come over too. They have some of the top plastic surgeons in the world.

'Korean girls are mostly fake' 'Plastic surgery is an everyday event in Korea' 'at least one thirds are fake', 'it is almost like shopping' - all these are hearsay, spread by exaggeration and jealousy but not backed up by facts. You need some knowledge of the people and the country in order to be able to understand the statistics correctly. The only true hearsay is 'Korea is Asia's capital of plastic surgery'. But unless you know how globally the p/s industry operates, you will never know what it means.

According to the 2011 ISAPS statistics (http://www.isaps.org/files/html-cont...0in%202011.pdf), the total plastic procedures in Korea (4.4%) was 649,938, ranked the 7th after US (21.1%), Brazil (9.8%), China (7.1%), Japan (6.5%), Mexico (5.4%), and Italy (4.8%). Do you know how many clients are from outside of Korea? The accepted figure is 30-40%, of which 90% are Chinese. (Plastic surgery boom as Asians seek 'western' look - CNN.com) For the benefit of doubt, let's take the conservative figure 30%. Then you will have 454,956 procedures for Koreans in 2011.

To see the 'numerical density' per person in Korea, divide 454,956 by Korea's 2011 population, 49,779,440. You will have 0.109 procedure per 1,000 people. or roughly 1.1 procedure per 10,000 person. But firstly, not all of this 1.1 person will be female, since only a half of the population are female, although we can safely assume that women are more prone to surgery. Secondly, those in entertainment industry may have a higher proportion of surgery than ordinary people, although we will never know the precise figure. Thirdly, the above 1.1 per 10k figure is the number of procedure, not the number of people. It is absolutely certain that at least some people may have more than one procedure in 2011. Then the final figure we will have for Korean women will be much lower than 1.1 person per 10,000. Even granted that young to middle-aged women will be the major clients, the figure will be still less than 1.0 per 10,000 persons.

Imagine you are walking down the street in Korea, and passed by 10,000 people, then even one person has not have plastic surgery. If you have passed by 20,000, then perhaps you may have come across one or two persons, and that person is more or less likely to be a woman, young to middle-aged.

Go to Korea, and live in an ordinary residential apartment area for some years. And see how often you hear or meet Korean women having had plastic surgery. It will be very very rare. Plastic surgery is very expensive even for Koreans. That's why you have so many rich Chinese women flooding to Seoul, 'Asia's capital of plastic surgery', where you can find the world best plastic surgeons.

This is why your talk of 'almost like shopping' is not only driven by hatred and jeolousy but also a sheer b/s. You don't have to deride others in order to show the pride of your ethnic beauty. There is nothing wrong with boasting about your own people's strength, and even other peoples may rejoice for that. But slandering others for the sake of bloating your ego is a whole different story. You will only invite sheer contempt. I rarely see Koreans or Japanese posting such a thing against other Asian peoples.

don't bring up raw numbers because that's not a good comparison. We're saying that South Korea has one of the highest or highest rates of plastic surgery, not the highest number. According to your data, South Korea does have one of the highest, if not the highest rate. It depends on if you use the original 649,938 procedures, or the 454,956 that you said was more fair. But if you're gonna use that number, then you'd have to cut the number for other countries as well. Anyways, with either number, South Korea has one of the highest rates, so there's your proof.

And secondly, the number of procedures in 2011 is not the number of procedures that everyone has ever had. Someone could have gotten a procedure in 2010 but not 2011, so that's not counted in 2011's total. With your "walking down the street" example, you're only counting people who got the procedure in 2011. And 454,956 out of 49,779,440 is about 100 out of 10,000, not 1 out of 100,000. You're a little off. But I do agree that some individuals could have gotten more than one procedure. But that just shows the weakness of your source. There are plenty of surveys that show that South Korean women have one of the highest percentages of plastic surgery done.

Thanks for the correction of the density. It is 9.1 procedures per 1,000 people. And you are right. Due to the global operation of the industry, we will have to cut the number for other countries as well, although it may be still the case that Seoul is becoming a more popular destination for foreign clients than other cities. And you are right again, the annual procedures do not reflect the cumulative numbers at all. And you are absolutely right in reading the implication of the statistics with which I cohere, Seoul has one of the highest rates, no more no less than that.

However there is not much difference between the countries of 'highest rates' when the figures are translated into the actual number of people affected, those who you encounter walking down the street. Whether it is 7 or 9 out of 1,000, we do not notice the differences in the real world. We are still dealing with very small numbers.

When less than 10 persons out of 1,000 people have plastic surgery, to keep spreading the hearsay 'Korean girls are all fake' 'At least one thirds are fake' 'It is like everyday shopping' can only be driven by ulterior motive. Slandering other ethnic groups won't add even an inch to the glory of one's own ethnicity; on the contrary, it will make it look more miserable. That was my point.

Many foreigners are coming now to have plastic surgery. This will skew the statistics quite a bit too. You will likely see an increase of Asian neighbors(Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Filipino, etc.) in the coming years coming to Japan for different cosmetic surgery procedures. Even some Americans that have been vacationing in Asia will schedule to have something done while on vacation.

now, there was this story of a s. korean man suing his wife for giving birth to an "ugly" baby (apparently the baby didn't look like the pretty mom), because the wife didn't tell the husband that she had plastic surgery before they got married. of course, how the man couldn't have known all the while they were dating is really suspicious, but the point is the husband won the case. and children being made to get plastic surgeries before they're even adults because their natural looks are unacceptable and they can't get a job with their natural looks? who's miserable now?

Man sues over ugly baby: Jian Feng, Chinese man, sues wife after she has 'extremely ugly baby girl'

You mean this? Rofl. But is she ugly because of an ethnic appearance? Nope.

Yes strongly oriental features are not considered beautiful in China anymore.

I don't know. What is considered strongly oriental? Japanese? Chinese? Nepalese? Burmese? As far as cosmetically enhancing oneself over there, it seems like a lot of Asians getting plastic surgery want to have some kind of hybrid look. From the photos I've seen, they want a Japanese nose (the bottom part) with Japanese double eyelid, Chinese jaw, and a more SEA or southern Chinese sized eyes.
