Or population, arguably. I think Singapore's population will top out at 7-8 million (thank God).

Taipei probably should be in 3 or 4; Tehran should be in at least 3 and Karachi at least 4. Tel Aviv should probably hit 4 and maybe Bangalore, too.

I think you have under-rated Bangkok.

1. Bangkok is a capital city.

2. The population is 8.3 million in a metro area of nearly 15 million.

3. Bangkok is considered the hub of all of South-East Asia.

4. Suvarnabhumi Airport is one of biggest, busiest and certainly most modern airports in the world.

... and ...

5. Bangkok is the most visited city in the entire world: more than New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Beijing, or Tokyo.

Bangkok is an -alpha city, not entirely underated... it may comes big in tourism but not business and politic?

like even Brussel are ranked higher, because the EU seat is there

and in case people wonder why Jakarta is ranked higher than Bangkok is probably:
- Sukarno-Hatta the busiest airport by passenger traffic
- ASEAN secretariat seat
- have metro population of 28 million
- Indonesia's economic stability growth for 4 year (though its been declining now), Thailand have been very slow these years
- Jakarta is the highest growing property and luxury market, that surprass Dubai and Bsngkok

Tier 1:

Tokyo, Hong Kong

Tier 2:

Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Istanbul (if counted), Mumbai

Tier 3:

Bangkok, New Delhi, Tehran, Osaka, Taipei, Karachi, Dubai

Then:

Tel Aviv, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Kolkata, Abu Dhabi, Dhaka, Manila, Calcutta, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangalore

This isn't counting some sort of religious significant with Jerusalem or Mecca.

Personally i would put KL and Jakarta higher since those 2 has replaced Bangkok as financial centers in ASEAN. Karachi is overatted despite being Pakistan's financial center, its much much less important than many others as a global city. I think Tehran is totally underatted because of the UN sanction, the city is better than many other Asian cities when it come to standard of living but probably not business or politics.

Tier 1:

Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai

Tier 2:

Seoul, Beijing, Singapore, Mumbai, Dubai

Tier 3:

Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, New Delhi, Tehran, Osaka, Taipei, Metro Manila

Tier 4:

Tel Aviv, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Kolkata, Abu Dhabi, Calcutta, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangalore, Karachi, Doha, Dhaka
