Ive been to Shenzhen a couple times, never to Guangzhou, but I dont know what is meant by Shenzhen being more "western". Sure Shenzhen along with other major cities in asia have adopted a lot of western traits, but Shenzhen still looks and feels very foreign and rich with Chinese culture. Plus like another poster said you are right on the border with Hong Kong, you could easily have weekend outings in HK to change things up and you can also relatively easily travel to Guangzhou on weekends. Just my thoughts..

I don't see anything Western in Shenzhen, you would see some foreigners ( mostly teachers ) but I don't see anything Western.

They're both pretty modern cities by China's standards but I like Shenzhen better. It looks more clean, more modern and better shopping opportunities. Like other people said, it's very close to Hong Kong which is nice for a weekend getaway.... Guangzhou was quite nice, but it's more traditional and the apartment buildings look more dirty and run-down.

There are more expats living in Guangzhou than Shenzhen. You can also experience 'China' more in Guangzhou than in Shenzhen. What I like the most in Guangzhou are the great Irish pubs where you can chat with other foreigners while drinking draft beer or coffee. Anyway you can always go to Shenzhen or Hongkong through train/bus.

Almost every city in Asia has foreigner expat or traveler types who frequent certain bars, particularly Irish-themed bars.

Not saying you didn't have a great time, but it's common throughout all of Pacific Asia.

I have been to Guangzhou and not Shenzhen and I second these thoughts. Much easier to get some variety to your weekend activities in Shenzhen plus the proximity to HK (the NY of Asia) is huge plus.

You should give us an update. I've always heard mixed opinions on Guangzhou. Next year my wife and I will be traveling the southern provinces of Guangdong, Hunan, Guangxi, and Guizhou by train.

Our goal is to eventually travel to all the Chinese provinces.
