I'm familiar with some of the bigger Korean blogs: The Marmot's Hole (news), Gusts of Popular Feeling (history, images of non-Koreans), Eat Your Kimchi and AllKpop (K-pop), etc. But I'd like to do some reading and I'm interested to know what some of the better Japan-focused blogs are.
I used to read Japan Probe but it's almost exclusively focused on Comfort Women and whaling now. I used to check Ampontan from time to time, too, but he died recently.
1000 things about Japan is a good one from a former expat American who moved to Japan in the late 80s and recently returned. Some unique aspects of Japanese life, the good, and the bad. She just recently finished her total 500 good things, 500 bad things, so now it's mostly reflections on her past life in Japan and the culture shock of coming back to the states.
The other one I read is maintained by the author of Tokyo Vice, Jake Adelstein. Japan Subculture. It's about all the seedy, backhanded, and generally darker side of Japan that most people just gloss over. I find it interesting reading, especially the intertwining of the Yakuza with the government and businesses over there. Makes you think twice about whether the company you're giving business to has ties to the mafia.
japancrush.com is a good one. They also have koreabang.com and chinasmack.com... they're collections of interesting things that are being discussed or blogged about in those countries.
