I am curious and very much interested in whether anyone on this forum has been to Bhutan ? Or what they think of the country itself. I have seen a few recent documentaries on Bhutan and it has opened up a whole new world to me in the Himalayan country.

I appreciate any response.

I've known people who've gone there. What is your main attraction?

Very expensive, but very unique place. Of course I'd like to visit there myself, but at this stage there are too many other countries to visit.

I don't know, I saw a program on PBS or a travelogue (?) somewhere and I was intrigued.

Though this is a blurb from the tourism site, all of this is why I am so fascinated. Kingdom of Bhutan | Bhutan Travel | Bhutan History, Culture | Bhutan Tourism Maybe that it seems serene and grounded but I have read that there are a lot of problems.

I recently read this:

Quote:
BBC News - Bhutan country profile - Overview
Bhutan is a tiny, remote and impoverished kingdom nestling in the Himalayas between its powerful neighbours, India and China.
Almost completely cut off for centuries, it has tried to let in some aspects of the outside world while fiercely guarding its ancient traditions.
The Bhutanese name for Bhutan, Druk Yul, means "Land of the Thunder Dragon" and it only began to open up to outsiders in the 1970s.
The Wangchuck hereditary monarchy has wielded power since 1907. But Bhutan became a two-party parliamentary democracy after elections in March 2008. This gave a landslide victory to the pro-monarchy Bhutan Harmony Party of former prime minister Jigme Thinley. The opposition People's Democratic Party also supports the monarchy.
Bhutan's ancient Buddhist culture and breathtaking scenery make it a natural tourist attraction.
Tourism is restricted; visitors must travel as part of a pre-arranged package or guided tour. Backpackers and independent travellers are discouraged....snipped...
I just wonder what the people are like. Is there much proverty ? I would love to "see" the country. I think it would be beautiful, in its own way.
