If anyone is interested in the literary side of Chinese science fiction, I suggest you pick up the recent English translation of The Three-Body Problem. It honestly puts most recent American novels in the field to shame, which is why it won the Hugo Award last year.
I don't like the sequel, The Dark Forest, quite as much. I think because it uses a different translator.
I like The Dark Forest, I thought it was just as good as The Three Body Problem by the end, although I agree Ken Liu, who translated the first volume, was the superior translator. He also translated the third volume which I am reading now, would recommend it to anyone, certainly hasn't disappointed so far. Looking forward to the film adaptation next year.
I need to review all the posts here to look for things I'd like to read or watch. I've watched a bunch of South Korean TV shows and movies on Netflix. The closest things to sci-fi that I can remember are Psychokinesis and Love Cells, but those are more fantasy. There was another that was a 3-pack of tales, one was about zombies in love ... but I can't find it on Netflix anymore. What I've stumbled onto consists mainly of romantic comedies and a few dramas. I'd love to find more sci-fi.
I think this is not exactly what the OP was talking about, but two of my childhood favorites were the Japanese movies "Atragon" and "The Mysterians". Back then, they were compelling for a kid. Now, they would be nostalgic and fun.
My only recent experience is some of the works of Ken Liu. I really like his work.
I need to get back to the series by Wesley Chu starting with "The Lives of Tao". Another I enjoyed was "China Mountain Zhang", but that was by an American writer, not of Asian descent.
I feel I have to clarify my most recent statements.
Coming from the comic book background & perspective (especially with the rise of anime/manga & now live action movies), there have often been crossovers between the different characters, which in of themselves are more reflective of being one or more different genres (i.e. Hulk, Thor, Mirage's TMNT, Archie, Deathlok [Michael Collins especially], Silver Surfer, Head-Masters/Transformers, Werewolf By Night etc).
Now if you are coming from the novel & non-gaphic book background, then there are well established genres like fantasy, horror, thriller, crime, supernatural, action, adventure, mystery, comedy, romance, drama, etc.
Variety is the spice of life, something to keep in mind in this era of global concentration & consolidation.
(These cats ain't even hiding that they have a political & identity propaganda agenda).
