I don't think SRK is well known outside Asia and the Asian diaspora in the west, Aishwarya Rai is probably more popular than him because she's an attractive woman(at least on camera).

SRK has never been in a Hollywood move, 'My Name Is Khan' was a Bollywood movie and Aishwarya Rai has acted far more Hollywood movies than SRK, she was in the 'Pink Panther' and many other Hollywood movies, she also won Miss.World, therefore she has more international recognition than SRK.

Generally who are well known in the world will also be well-known in their home country, and foreign starts who were well known in their home country is just kind of like well known in the world.
