As previously mentioned, people in Asia generally think of individual nationalities before they think "Asian," but when they do think "Asian" as far as people are concerned, in my experience they think of the region from China to the East and the South. To the West is where India, and they don't generally immediately discern the difference between Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, etc.

Part of it is cultural, too: East and Southeast Asia are more directly influenced by Chinese culture (the Sinosphere) and India and South Asia have their own, separate dominant culture that is equally ancient.
Then why is all of Southeast Asia (except Vietnam and the Philippines) in the Indosphere rather than the Sinosphere?

Even if a Pakistani person were, in error, considered Middle Eastern, that's still an Asian category.

I guess on paper when you marked down your racial identity, but in everyday reality, they won't be viewed as being Asian people by strangers. The Miss America 2013 winner I posted earlier is a perfect example of that. I've even heard stories of Bangladesh Americans even facing racial discrimination in post 9-11 America. I just proves what you right down on a piece of paper, doesn't always translate to how society will perceived you when it comes to race.

Well it depends on where you are. In the UK, Asian mostly refers to South Asians, not East Asians.

True but how often have you mistaken an East Asian for being a South Asian?

You dont mistake them for one another, but depending on where you are in the world, the definition of Asian is different. I have friends who were born and raised in the Middle East (Iraq, Palestine, and Saudi Arabia) and they call themselves Asian and don't understand why people in the US don't consider them Asian.

I also have friends raised in Pakistan and they definitely call themselves Asian

In the UK the word Asian is usually synonymous with someone from the greater Indian sub continent. Hardly surprising since most of the Asians there come from the same. For the sake of clarity (if there's any confusion) it might be useful to refer to South Asian - Indian, Pakistani, Nepalese etc., or East Asian for Japanese, Chinese, Korean and so on. Incidentally, the level of ignorance shown by some here is extraordinary. To suggest that Pakistan is in the Middle East (yes, I know these definitions are ultimately arbitrary, arguably Eurocentric) is absurd. The fact that Islam is Pakistan's principle religion is irrelevant.

Does the term "South American" only refer to people from certain South American countries?
Are Norwegians European, but Italians not?
