i am a dark skinned black woman and i went to a japanese suburb years ago, the people there treated me horribly and were VERY VERY racist. but i went to tokyo for one day and it was awesome! If you had a bad experience in a country, would you go back but visit another city or just screw that whole country?

Where was this Japanese suburb and how did they treat you?

I don't think you'll encounter too much problems in Tokyo (well as you found out) or the rest of Japan, the world is becoming more global.

Odd...that doesn't seem like normal behaviour.

That's strange. I've never seen Japanese people harrass or chase people.

Anyways, I know a number of African/African-American people in Japan, mostly men (and just one woman), and can't say I've ever heard that particular kind of experience before.

Not denying that it happened, but that sounds like a very odd one-off occurrence. I think if you visited Tokyo on a one-day experience, and had an 'awesome' time, and you seem to be expressing thoughts of returning based on that, I'd say go for it.

the same thing could happen in the USA if you ever pass through some small farming town, the locals act like they never saw a minority before and they all gang up and run you out of town

happened to a friend of mine back in high school, he was the only hispanic in a all white high school in the country farm area and they were very racist , he had to transfer to another school that had more minorities

Sounds like a strange thing that happened to me. There are crazies no matter where you go and if you got chased by someone, he might have been crazy.

I would try again. There are manybeautiful areas of the nation, explore outside of Tokyo.

FWIW, I know an AA woman who's a soul singer in her 60's; phenomenally talented artist with an amazing voice... she lived in Japan through the 80's and into the 90's, and still makes trips there to work and record with Japanese musicians. She will gush endlessly about how much she loves it there and how much respect she's been treated by the Japanese people; as a studio musician, she's not exactly a recognizable celebrity so it's not that. She could be a booster for their tourism bureau, honestly
