Kyoto is pretty far from Fukushima. I haven't heard of radiation from the meltdown any further west than Shizuoka.

Was any of the radioactive garbage shipped there? I don't think the people of that area would allow it, but you might want to check on it. (I think most of that was shipped to poorer areas.)

However, food from the contaminated regions is being shipped and sold all over Japan. If you're concerned about radiation, then just be careful with what you eat. Avoid processed food and cheap restaurants, unless you're sure they use local food for cooking. People in that region tend to have a certain amount of pride, so there should be several restaurants that use local foods in their cuisine, but the places catering to people on a budget might not. Be wary of eating any seafood from the Pacific Ocean side of Japan. Be particularly wary of mushrooms, berries, and dairy products that may have come from up north.

Ask your hotel info desk to help find those places to eat that only use locally grown ingredients.
