Solely population-wise? This is a no brainer since it is guaranteed to happen.

Economy wise, China is already engaging its efforts to disperse its economy development to different regions within the country and I cannot guarantee Shanghai will eternally have the absolutely best resources from Beijing. But it might.

Another false accusation on reality. Of course I love Asia style buildings, and authentic Asian culture equally compared with the other side of the World European counterpart equivalent. I am just saying an objective solid rationalization dependent on individual varied reflection.

When have I ever said I only prefer European architecture? I never said the false blatant exaggeration blown way out of proportion you are saying.

There is many reasons why I select Shanghai before Tokyo with the current phase of my life lately of recent times. Overall Architecture urban landscape atmosphere(Including ultra Asian Pudong area of Shanghai), Nightlife, Cost Of Living, Neighborhoods, Technically less Conformist society, People Scene, Lifestyle, Origins & History, and Quick Progress Into The Future.

At the same time, Tokyo upstage Shanghai on wealthier economics, current Global city status rank(Not a long lasting claim at all between each city), proximity to the mountains, cleanliness, and reputation(Shanghai is astronomically improving). Each city is a World class destination.

Wow, why would you not want to travel thousands of miles away? One of the best actions anyone is ever able to achieve with their life and guaranteed epic times wherever someone travels far away on the opposite side of Planet Earth. International travel is a passion of many people's lives and a valuable use of time, and money to make unique memories, and experience.

Never have I said architecture is an exclusive only reason to travel thousands of miles. One of a high variety of reasons includes architecture and lots of other live highlights of empirical sensational experience of immediate surroundings. A masterpiece of philosophical ideological thinking approach on empiricism version of mind, soul, and life.

Hopefully, China maintains all versions of the architecture around, and forever keeping the high variety of magical buildings.

Communist eras of the past sometimes threatened this architectural atmosphere, even around current times right now.

People get surprised when they encounter or discover a vast array of European resembling buildings in the Chinese cities of Harbin, Shanghai, and Macau.

Tokyo is a very dense city with a population near the entire Canada, the population is still growing with Japanese moving to the area from other parts of Japan.

Size of the economy, Tokyo is still bigger. Shanghai needs to have similar cost of living and income to become the world's largest city economy.

Shanghai is an important stock market. However the renminbi is not a free currency, international investors trade Chinese stocks listed in HK, the HK dollar being a free currency. China started modernisation later than Japan. Beijing is also an important city and HK has extensive links with businesses in mainland China and global markets in other countries.
