It is interesting that so many Koreans are Christians, especially Catholic. Other East Asian nations do not have so many.

more Protestant than Catholic. The mega churches in South Korea are usually Pentecostal. There are a lot of Presbyterians too.

Why did it not happen in Taiwan?
Taiwan had a lot of American missionaries too. However very few Taiwanese are Christian.

I think Christianity was sort of linked to nationalism in Korea. I remember reading about it, but I can't say why the same didn't happen in Taiwan, totally different situations i suppose. At one point Christianity - specifically Catholicism - spread rapidly throughout Japan but the shogunate stamped it out. It's hard to imagine Japan being like the Philippines or something in that respect.

The presence of missionaries alone doesn't mean anything. Missionaries were in Japan, China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos as well, but most of the people in those countries had the good sense to ignore them.

Yeah I think it was somehow linked to the independence struggle against the Japanese, I remember reading about it. Today I think the Seoul area is like the stronghold for Christianity while the west and south is more Buddhist.
