In the same way they both claim the Diaoyu Islands, which is disputed with Okinawa of Japan.
That is embarrasing tbh,for a country has little recognition and power, our governments have the face to "claim" such territories.

China has long established the sea area around Hainan Island as its turf, with troops stationed in some reefs. Vietnam, without any ally, won't make any success clashing with China in those areas very close to Hainan Island. That northwestern part of the South China Sea is not part of the Spratly but another groups of Islands.

Taiwan not only claim, but has coast guard stationed on the largest and central island in Spratly.

People in China do not mind if those islands are occupied by Taiwanese.

Actually Taiwan still occupies two islands of Fujian Province, but people in China never see it as a problem.
In case Taiwan claims independence, just hypothetically, it will be another Crimea.

Taiwan has a Fukien Province government with its capital in Kinmen

Diaoyu Islands are claimed as part of Taiwan Province by both PRC and ROC. They are now controlled by Japan, and backed by the US.

Sadly, China with its military might will take most of the islands and surrounding seas. The current Vietnamese leadership is too corrupt and is on China's payroll. Vietnam should not initiate a war with China anyway. There is no point in fighting a military that is 20 times bigger and more technologically advance. China can destroy Vietnam infrastructures simply by shooting missiles at various targets. Of course, they won't dare to invade. To respond appropriately, Vietnam and the Phillipines should cut all relations with China. Vietnam and the Phillipines have major trade deficits with China anyway and they should be better off not doing business with them.

If Vienam shut down relations with China, the loser will of course be Vienam. See the stock price reaction yesterday in Vienam? 6 % drop. Vienam to China is very small. China to Vienam is huge. All the foreign companies will leave if China boycotts Vienam

Yeah, shutting down trade between the two countries that's worth billions is just stupid because the militaries got some petty argument over a bunch of small islands.

Vietnam-China trade relationship is mostly one way. Vietnam is importing about $40 billion from China and exporting only $11 billion. If the situation deteriorates, it may be necessary to end relations with China. Of course, it will be painful but pretending nothing is happening is not an option either. I just hope China pushes enough that the Vietnamese people rise up and overthrow this corrupt Vietnamese government. But I think Beijing doesn't want this to happen so they will encroach at a very slow pace
