Yeah, that is what I've noticed, too. It's like China is the leader and Vietnam is the follower.

Even economically, China became an open market starting in the early 90's and then Vietnam follows a decade later.

Vietnamese is very similar to Hainanese in language and tonation most of the Vietnamese words are borrowed from Hainanese languages. So you figure it out yourself.

Hainanese is related to minnan which is similar to Taiwanese. Many Han Chinese in hainan originated from the southern coast of Fijian long long time ago. But they are separated for too long now they don't understand each other. The li people of hainan is an ethnic minority group of China.

Like Korean and Japanese, Vietnamese is not a Han Chinese language, there are still some influences.
