Would you say it's as devoutly Islamic as places like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc or are they more liberal about their Muslim beliefs and practices like people in the former USSR countries in Central Asia?
Well most indonesians are liberal Muslims and are uncomparable to the middle east to let's say Iraq or Jordan, there is no legal law for alchohol too if they would like to drink. Some provinces are very islamic however like acheh as an example.
There are obvious influence fro ancient Hinduism and Buddhism in Indonesia and it still applies to some of the practices.

Some Indonesians are very muslim, and some are not. Some are even non-Muslims, like in Bali and a few other areas.
One thing I noticed across the board, is that Indonesian women have no issues with dating non-Indonesians! Nightlife in Jakarta is fantastic, almost as comparable as Bangkok or Manila, but different.

How visible are prostitutes in Jakarta? What about massages with 'happy endings'?
One thing I noticed in Bali vs Thailand was not once was I offered a 'happy ending' after a massage lol.

There aren't go-go clubs like you'd see in the other two cities. I don't know about massages in Jakarta either.
But, there is a pretty active and amazing nightlife scene. Lots of bars and clubs and such, and a lot of people like to go out at night. (Which is something you just wouldn't see among Arabic women in the Arabic world - with the exception of perhaps Beirut).
Prostitutes. I'm sure they are around, but I think in Jakarta, they'd be more freelancer types in the bars and clubs. Not a barfine type situation and such like Manila/Bangkok in a nudie bar. Different than that.
Red light district of Jakarta is in Mangga Besar, but it's very closed and almost impossible to see (but they sell herbal viagras there openly and some of them are just plain fakes). They look like an ordinary building from the outside, but inside you will see a strip club. Have you ever heard Gang Dolly in Surabaya? it was once the largest red light district in Southeast Asia, but then as Thailand progresses they replaced it lol and also there is a tendency of cleaning up towards these red light districts or massage "plus-plus" in Indonesia (the a go go term in Indonesia), so they don't really grow big. Not growing doesn't mean that its not available. There is also a square in Jakarta where guys and girl would hangout to offer "special service" but it's not really an open prostitution.
There is a famous hotel in Jakarta is also well known to be a center of prostitution, which you can even get Uzbek and China girls, this is where the "big bosses" usually hangout to get the girls.
Maybe if you want to see prostitution in Indonesia, i would say Batam is the most appealing one and you would see one street full of girls offering these services, as its one destrination for Singaporeans to get banging. But really if you want prostitution in Indonesia to get really appealing you had to come and look for them, they wouldn't offer it for you.

It does? Well I haven't gone looking for it or anything, and maybe I don't frequent those areas (trips to Malaysia have usually been with family), but I didn't get that impression. Singapore has a few traces of it left, Joo Chiat is a bit like that but it seems to cater more to an Asian clientele. Singapore used to be well known for prostitute as being a 'sin city' before Bangkok got big. Hong Kong too. The book/film 'The World of Suzie Wong' sort of illustrates that.

Having traveled to them all, I've really enjoyed going out in almost every Southeast Asian country, but Malaysia is one of the few where I regularly feel 'ah, why bother?'

Well open prostitution don't mean that it pars with Thailand when it comes to nightlife, but what i notice is loads of Cambodians, Vietnamese, etc offering service at the street of Kuala Lumpur with very little problem, that to me seems to be less hassle with the law when it comes to prostitution business in Malaysia as compared to Indonesia, and then there's this "uncle" that offers you the service in Bukit Bintang. And there's Brickfield which is the redlight area of kl, even worse than Bukit Bintang. Nightlifewise Malaysia is just ok, nothing special really..
