Recently Crimea has been in the news because of the uprising going on in the Ukraine. All I know about the Crimea is connected with Florence Nightingale. So has anyone here been there and why is it so important an area that Russia is interested in what happened there now when it is currently connected to the Ukraine (although it is an autonomous region)?

I have been there.

It is important to Russia due to the historical ties with Russia, the large Russia population that is basically loyal to Russia, and the strategic location that includes a Russian navy base.

This is a very complicated situation. In recent elections, Crimea, along with the south-eastern part of the Ukraine, voted in favor of close ties with Russia. However, it goes further back in history and is not all that easy to understand.

To fully understand what's going on in the Ukraine, one needs to study its history from this link. And, there's also Russia's actions in Georgia @ Georgia (country) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and its military attack against Ossetia which brought Russian military response.
