Have you ever looked at a map? How is HK not smaller and less powerful than China? seriously...Do you think a city with no defense of its own is equal to China with nukes and a massive military?

Hkers look down on mainlanders because of their cultural difference. But Shanghainese look down on HKers too. Beijingrs look down on everybody...It is just simple regionalism.

South Koreans look down on everybody because they think they are better than everybody else....it's an expression of their inferiority complex for having been sandwiched between CHN and JPN for so long, and used as a stepping stone by both.

Japanese think they are superior to all Asians....

So, Asia being so big and old, has plenty of prejudice to go around.

lots of Chinese mainlanders look down on the Indians because they are supposedly "smelly and dirty".......etc etc etc etc etc. It's all quite infantile, actually.
Well i dont know whats wrong with HK and CHN either. But they said China neglected them in some ways which makes them looks down on China.

But I really think south korean isn't that bad. They're nice and warm. Same goes to japanese.

How about making fake products that kill babies? Have you heard of gutter oil? They will do anything for a profit. Using bleach, formaldehyde in your foods.

I'm an American who actually, for reals, lives in China and don't really think of it as being "unsafe."

Those things were scandals, and you know why they were scandals? Because they were shockingly and uncommonly callous and inhuman.

Also, it's worth noting that two of the culprits in the scandal were executed, and a further four were imprisoned for life. In the US, the company's punishment would be that they were sued and lost money.

If you could, befriend a variety of locals or returning overseas Chinese and ask them about the "safety" of local products. Try to watch CCTV and read local internet forums. Let's just say, when I lived in Shanghai my friend from Beijing opened my eyes to some alarmingly "unsafe" practices unleashed on unsuspecting consumers in China - the consequence of greed, inept government regulations that are rarely enforced, and corruption.

China is growing too fast for many to be comfortable. Its economy is growing too fast even for its many other institutions to keep pace and to evolve so that they can better guide and watch over the economy itself. This is why there are so many "scandals". That said, scandals happen in every country, and China is simply so gigantic, and the economy so big, that when it happens in China, it is magnified on a massive scale.

There are still lots to do to improve China's system, nobody would argue against that. But the accomplishments are also amazing.

What kind of accomplishments? As far as I'd see, only S Korea is growing fast and attracted more tourists. Really I think, even though S Korea or Japan are smaller than China, they're just great in some ways and looks much better.

Confusing statement in so many ways. For someone who is in school, you have not learned very much. Did you say you are Australian?

Indeed. Regarding food safety, China is currently experiencing the same problems that plagued the growing US of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which eventually led to the formation of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938. Perhaps China needs a modern version of The Pure Foods Movement in order to spur change.
