How are countries in the first category 'more asian' than those in the second?? How are you measuring 'asianness'? Is it something that can be measured? There is no one Asian culture.

Maybe he was basing on the looks ( more oriental looking ) and culture more similar to Chinese.
Because Filipinos and Guamanians share many things in common. Same history and culture that is why they think they are on the same category. Actually, I think they should have just really grouped Philippines and Guam together because of the same shared history and culture. I think Filipinos would assimilate more with Guamanians.
Yes I think Guam is more closer to Filipinos, as we used to be 1. With lots of connection on Philippine history in terms of language too because both language belong to austronesian. Both part of East Indies during Spanish era, both under the US.
Asia is a geographic term. when western people talk about asian people, they usually refer to SEA and east asia. But in east asia, there is a huge influence by ancient China, the country adopted the nutrition of confucianism do have some decent of Chinese, that is a strong tie towards their self-congnition as an east aisan rather than the geographic word "asian".

Then Mongolians and Japanese are slightly closer to Europeans than Vietnamese and Thai, Lao without Indic blood. Culturally most of South East Asia is still very Asian and less westernised than say Japan.

In the UK, they mean Indians and Pakistanis when they say "Asian"
"Asian" is really a mess term. I actually like the term "oriental" when referring to people from East/Southeast Asia because it actually just means "Eastern" but somehow it's offensive now. The term "Asian" should be used for everyone on the Asian continent.

The thing is Asian for most people are just Chinese and Chinese looking people so it already gets annoying. In Portugal, they only think of Chinese as if Chinese are the only ones who live in Asia and though Goa used to be a Portuguese colony, they hardly consider them
asian but really Indian.
All the Filipinos they see in Portugal are considered Chinese. I think the term Asian should just be changed.
