Basically Tibet has been part of Chinese empires in the past long before America was taken over by Europeans. Yes, the government has done bad things there, but it's kind of hypocritical for the west to demand independence for Tibet like that. I'm not personally opposed to independence, but get sick of their preachiness. Of course I don't want the Tibetans to lose their culture but we have to remember Tibet was no Shangri la, it was basically an oppressive feudal state ruled by the llamas.

um...last I checked, Alaska was still located on the North American continent. It hasn't defected to Siberia, not yet. It tried, at one point in history, but that didn't work out...

Tibet is a part of China until it isn't, just like North Dakota is part of the USA, until it isn't. Empires rise and fall, and both China and the US (and even little Japan), along with all other nations today, must live under this rule. Territories like Tibet and the American Mid West are all "part of" something until that something is no longer capable of exercising jurisdiction over it.

What does the OP mean by "should be"? If we ask that question, then possibly every single nation state on earth will have to re-examine their current borders again, because many of these borders were previously soaked with lots of bad blood.

Tibet is part of the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China (both governments concur on this issue), as of now. It is what it is. Should the PRC cease to exist, and a new government comes to power, then they will have to decide whether they want to re-examine the Tibetan autonomy issue in some future date. Most likely, no matter who holds the power in Beijing in the foreseeable future, there will not be any concessions on the Tibetan independence issue because that is tantamount to political suicide in the Chinese political and historical context. Ideally, a more enlightened future government in Beijing could grant wider range of autonomy to Tibet (unlike the current limited autonomy) while they continue to remain part of of the Chinese nation state.

well said.

It is funny that many people have trouble with Tibet being part of China, while feeling completely fine with Britain still claiming Falkland, or France owning French Guiana, or Hawaii being part of America.

Maybe they want to go back to the days the western power could freely carve up countries however it suits their needs.

Tibet was only part of China for around 700 out of the last 3000 years.
