Singapore's relations have improved with the PRC, but yeah, I still suspect the US, depending on the situation too.

Singapore's relationship with US is good, but we value our relationship with China too, if not why the emphasis of learning Chinese as mother tougue ?
The US has combat ships stationed in Singapore. The US provides training to Sinaporean solders in the US. If Singapore is forced to make a choice in time of war, we all know whose side it will take, and this is what worries the PRC.

As to learning Chinese, it is solely for business reasons. Nobody has a problem with doing business and making money.

Well during the Communist insurgency in Malaya and during the tumultuous years leading up to and after Singapore joining Malaysia the pro-PRC Communists were strong in Singapore. Lee and his PAP were vehemently opposed to Communism, although they shrewdly adopted a lot of the Communist Party's managerial framework for Singapore. I'm not sure when they recognised the PRC, but I think they recognised the ROC before that. After that I'm not sure but it seems like the relationship has improved.

Learn Mandarin was principally to unite the Chinese dialect groups but also yes, greater economic ties to China, Mandarin and the Mandarin-speaking diaspora. Sadly, this is at the expense of the 'dialects' which are really languages.

Singapore's location is very strategic, but it does not control all the ships going to the Starit of Malacca so if Singapore refuses to be in friendly terms with China (which is highly unlikely), Chinese ships can still bypass the port of Singapore anyway. Also, what makes any of you think that Thailand will have cozier ties with China compared to Singapore?

While Panama certainly has closer ties with the US, most trade from China that passes by the Panama Canal is bound for the US East Coast anyway. In case of US-China relations turning sour, there is not much use for the Nicaragua canal as there will be far fewer shipments that will need to pass by that way.

I agree it is highly unlikely SIngapore will want to strain ties with China

Why not ask the Singapore government why your country serves at America's largest naval base in Asia, why the US has the right to use half of Singapore's airport, and why America's ships can station at Singapore's port without any advanced permission from the Singapore government. the US has deployed all its most advanced weapon is Singapore as well.

Singapore being a small Christian country is surrounded by much larger Islamic nations. Of course it needs the protection of a powerful Christian nation. If Singapore loses such protection, it simply can't exist peacefully and prosperously as it is now.

If you look at history, Singapore has done many things to **** off China. Google Gwadar port. Singapore bid high price for the operation of the port during 2007-2012 so that China couldn't, just to let it idle.

"In September 2011, the Wall Street Journal reported that Gwadar is doing little business as a commercial port, and that Pakistan had asked China to take over the operation. A year later, China confirmed that it would be taking control of Gwadar, which they believe has the potential to serve as an oil pipeline hub for Chinese energy needs."

Singapore did this because it doesn't want China to be able to bypass Malacca strait in shipping the oil from Africa and the mid east. More information:

Trust me, Singapore doesn't consider China as a friend.

Singapore does not consider china as a friend ?? Ok I reserve my judgement about that statement.

Then what about UK Singapore ties ? Do you think SIngapore is a minion to UK too and suck up to get into UK good books ??

Last question, just curious are you a white American or ??
