Thailand's Full-Moon Parties Have Become a Trashy Disgrace | TIME.com

I had no interest in going to the Full Moon Party, not my scene...if people wanna party, that's cool, but I think it's just become really trashy, in more ways than one, a place for people to do drugs, women to get sexually taken advantage of, and basically a big dumping ground/rubbish bin. Typical hedonistic, careless, selfish foreign tourists who come and mess a place up...a once pristine beach covered in litter, a sight not too uncommon in touristy and populated parts of Asia. I guess it's one downside of mass tourism, even 'eco' tourism...

The biggest disgrace is undercover police advertising weed to innocent tourists just to extort them later for a couple hundred or even thousand bucks.

I went to a few in 2004-2005, no idea how much things have changed since then, and yes their were undercover cops trying to sell drugs at that time. The beach was still quite nice at that time.

It doesn't make for good law enforcement, but I'd much rather be extorted than go to prison, lol.

Saw a documentary about the full moon party, there was a English girl in her 20's locked up for 3 months (she couldn't pay the bribe) for just a single joint.

I'm also talking about the literal trash (actually that was my main gripe here).

Well what can I say, you take the risks. In all their hedonistic frenzy tourists should remember that Thailand is still a country where those convicted of possessing a certain amount of drugs can still be given the death penalty.
