I grew up in the early 80's the first 8 were always in the news for various reasons, India and Pakistan because they play cricket.
But did you already see Lebanon and Iraq or even Iran and Pakistan as ASIAN countries,
I always thought they were Arab, like Arabia was a continent on its own stretching from Mauritania to India.

I edited the previous post to correct that, no I cannot say I was sure they were in Asia at the time. One that should be In there and I certainly knew was in Asia is the Philippines (Ferdinand Marcos was always in the news). Should put it in below Indonesia.

I thought Brunei was not a famous country even in Asia.
Thailand is not as bad as the other countries in SE Asia, it performs around the same level as China nowadays.
Vietnam is still behind Philippines.

Brunei was also popular then since some of the sexiest Filipina celebrities were linked with the Sultan of Brunei. It was all over the media.

And I thought Singapore is part or nearby China. And yes, China is also popular due to numbers of Chinoys in the Philippines.

Saudi Arabia is also popular destination of male Filipino seamen and construction workers.

Hongkong and Singapore is popular destination for domestic helpers!

Indonesia/Thailand were always placed as the same bowl as the Philippines interms of economy back then.

We always thought of Vietnam as a country that is poorer than the Philippines, and that was back then either.

I believe most people donít remember their childhood very well, especially to fine details like first countries and cities they discovered while living very far away.

I reckon I learned about South Korea, China, Japan, India, and Mongoliaís existence first as countries, and Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Mumbai, and Osaka for cities.

Exact responses might vary depending on where someone is originally from and what they remember to relevant details in memory.

I would say China, Israel and Vietnam would probably been the first ones that I heard about.

Can't really remember when I first started recognising countries, but my first solid understanding of different countries came about after nagging my Mum to buy an atlas that I spotted in a secondhand shop. I have no idea what the attraction was as I didn't fully understand what the atlas represented, just seemed innately attracted to it.

I then quickly became very interested in all things geography and cultures reading through the entire "Countries of the World" series at the children's section of the local library. By the age of 9 would probably have been aware of most Asian countries and some of the major cities of different countries.

Tokyo for most western people who watched Japanese cartoons. The stories are mostly based on Tokyo. Unlike the cartoons, Japanese movies and tv dramas are not that many in the West, but they can be often seen on tv channels in Taiwan, HK and Singapore.
