The concept of "Far East" does not really appear a lot in Chinese literature. Although we know China is a part of the Far East, when I see the word the first thing comes to my mind is Myanmar.

Far East is an extremely Euro-centric term, so naturally it doesn't appear in Chinese literature. Japan was what Chinese literatus had in mind when they referred to something as "eastern"(東瀛).

Anyway, East Asia is Far East.

Sometimes the term is used, mainly in translated works, and people know the meaning. Just not commonly used.

Then I misunderstood. I thought by Chinese literature you meant literary works written in Chinese, instead of translated works.

For me, Far East implies a loose collection of Pacific Asian countries...I think Hong Kong is my 'Far East' reference point, with a loose conglomeration of places like Vietnam & historically neighboring China next to HK, etc.

In other words, it's always had a Cantonese-centered, along with Vietnam kind of imagery to me. The HK junk boats are one of the images that automatically pops in my mind.

As 'Far East' is an English word, and HK was an extremely successful colony of the British, than I think I've always had that association. Japan, to me, while even a bit further Far East, seems to solidly be Japan, without any other connotation/reference to it.

Far East has always been more China/HK centric to me.
