A recent poll in 2014 on views of Japan by the people in China found 90% negative, 5% netural, 10% positive.

Other than the allure of a free vacation, I don't think that's the case. Perhaps among educated, middle-class-to-affluent urbanites, but there are also massive swaths of the population who wouldn't ever want to set foot there. Even among those who are more thoughtful and curious about Japan are probably more likely to visit Korea, who had 3.7 times as many tourists in one year than Japan, or Thailand, who had about 5.5 times as many.

This link breaks down the data as to how each country views one another quite well, and states that China has an 80% "unfavorable" view towards Japan (while Japan's is 90% unfavorable towards China). Again I ask, why would people be tripping over themselves to visit a nation that they've been told by society is filled with thieves and murder apologists?

I would rate Japan negatively too but definitely I want to visit it if there is a good chance.
Most Chinese are the same.

Maybe like an American visiting Italy or France, but I'm talking about the kind of American that's more like a redneck visiting Paris or Rome...
