Today 01/11/2007 news in IRAN: Robbers receive amputation of RIGHT HAND and LEFT FOOT as a deterrent to other troublemakers! Is this the 21st century or 14th century? When are people in this world going to realize the PERSIAN EMPIRE is over with and cruelty is to be abolished. Punishment YES, CRUELTY NO. Other thoughts? Steve
We still kill people for crimes in America, as the former poster said, any many Americans like it that way. I think many Americans feel that our laws are weak and would happily adopt Taliban/Persian Empire style punishments. Rapists get castrated, thieves lose hands/feet, cheating wives get stones, people who watch porn lose an eye, etc. I personally agree with the OP with Punishment/Yes and Cruelty/No. The idea of being incarcerated for instance, is that the punishment is being removed from society and losing ones' rights of freedom of movement, seeing ones families, friends, work, etc.
What do you do with people like Kenneth Lay? White-collar corporate crime?
Force them to live like the lowest, most exploited worker. Low pay, no benefits at all of any kind, no vacation , poor working environment etc.. Seems quite appropriate.
We still kill people for crimes in America, as the former poster said, any many Americans like it that way. I think many Americans feel that our laws are weak and would happily adopt shari'a style punishments. I fixed that for you.
also wanted to add that incarceration in some instances can also result in unwarranted sodomy.
I agree it seems utterly barbaric but so does the death penalty ( especially when innocent people are executed) and when torture takes place in the context of the so-called war on terror ( whether in Guantanamo bay , torture flights, or abroad ).
We may on the surface be more "civilised" but I don't think you have to scratch the surface that much to realise that our humane standards can reek of hypocrisy too.
I agree with all of these post. It is so easy to point the fingers at others yet be so complacent with the barbaric practices of one's own.
Its like my grandma says " everyone's s*** stinks but yours" (sorry, she's very country)
The US death penalty is not cruel punishment. We used to do death by firing squads and electrocution. Now it is chemicals that enter the body. That is the least cruel method to date.
And when you have children like Nixzmary Brown and Baby Grace (who washed ashore in Texas in a box) who were repeatedly tortured, beaten, and abused by the same person for years until that person finally killed them; well by every ethical standard that person deserves his/her death. That is why we have the death penalty in place; because there are those out there who live amongst us who hold no value for life. They kill without remorse; they murder without guilt; they burn with hatred; and what is more unbearable to think about is that even now as i type this there are children/infants who can not defend themselves being beaten and mutilated slowly. All one has to do is read of their account to be sickened of the atrocity.
It is for this reason that we have the death penalty and gladly so. These people are not fit for society and do deserve the death that awaits them in our great country.
I realize this is my opinion; but i will always support the death penalty as long as we have people who take away life so easily and thoughtlessly.
