Then another island within sight occupied by Malaysia. And then way up north closer to Taiwan maybe an Island claimed by Indonesia. All these nations are now trying to get cell phone service out there in the middle of nowhere, as if that is the end-all of official recognition.
Yeah, it is pretty confusing out there. It is dangerous to be there too.

You have to blame on the former US President Richard Nixon. He fully recognized the PRC
as the government of China. He didn't void any previous aggreements and contracts with ROC.
So the Nine-Dotted Line agreement was valid and sound, even though it was given to ROC.

I forgot to added that Japan wrestled Guam out of US control during WWII, but US wrestled
it back. US has never recognized it as a part of US territory until they signed the pact in 1950.

Hdre's a comment by an observer on the SCS issue..I think he hits it on the head!

"The American Congress refuses to give anything to China regarding it standing at the World Bank, so China goes out alone and does something else like the AIIB.

Lots of egg on face. Then it seems that all of American elite reacts extremely negatively regarding the island reclamation.

Like they never expanded their base at Guam. How far is Guam from US mainland anyways?

The Americans are upset because they know they are getting beat to the punch. They are always reactive with China nowadays. Whatever they do, is not enough.

The Americans like competition, but they don't like to lose. Hence the bitterness.

Let them vent. Others can sit back, and laugh.

Sooner or later the Americans have to face reality. You can't be that involved in the Middle East, and take on Russia, and China, all at the same time."

There you have it, folks. The US wont do anything but complain about China's actions.

^ all this under the pretext of protecting freedom of navigation, or sovereignty of smaller Asian countries, as if these are the real issue. I am ok with America's aggressiveness, but annoyed by its hypocrisy and disgusting self-righteousness. America for some reasons always lives in the dream of being the ultimate hero to save the world from some villain. Too many Hollywood movies I guess.

so claiming 90% of south china sea is the right way to response for US denial of China's growing influence?

No, but in the context of the viets who claim roughly 80%, and the taiwanese who actually claim even more than 90%, China's claim is not all that odd. The only difference, and it is huge, is that China is powerful and can actually dominate what it claims. The viets and the taiwanese....well, nobody cares what they want or claim because they are 90 lb weaklings.

These islands have very little military value, even with the completed runways, so you all need to just calm down. The little weaklings like the filipines are using their sad puppy face to get the US to stand up to them. The US would be stupid to fight China on the filipinos' behalf...even more stupid to fight on the viets' behalf. The SCS will be Chinese, sooner or later. What the small countries need to do is to come to an agreement with China about how the SCS can be used for everyone's good. Maybe turn much of it into protected marine park for wildlife conservation, especially the endangered sea turtles? That would be my pick.

protected marine park? aren't all those apprehended Chinese fishing boats bear endangered turtles and giant clams?

That's my point. China evolve to become an environmental protector. In return, the SCS is Chinese, essentially. I have no problem with this.

Give the South China Sea to China and ask them to take care of its environment? The reason they're occupying the Spratlys is because of its possible energy reserves! Giving the South China Sea to the PRC is like selling your soul to the devil in exchange of going to heaven.
