We need to find a smart phone for our daughter that works in both US and Europe - she'll be in Spain for a year. Looking for a smart phone that is not an Iphone too expensive that can easily accommodate a Sim Card. We live in China but will be traveling to Hong Kong, Phuket Thailand, and Malaysia. Any suggestions on best place to buy among these places. Learning towards Hong Kong but some say good deals in Thailand.

Samsung Galaxy S4 - via Amazon - $299 USD - quad band GSM.

Cheap, reliable and works everywhere. Buy in HK or Malaysia. You can ask where you are staying for the local electronics market.

I have a Xiaomi Hongmi I got here in Guangzhou for 1200RMB that works worldwide and is also dual SIM card... six months on, still strong

This said, Chinese phones generally don't work with the Google apps store that is the standard overseas without some tricky stuff on the phone (called "rooting"). In HK, you can get similar deals but have full access to stuff like Google Play.

I have heard good things about the Xiami. My cheap China samsung has few features but great for swapping sim cards. My expensive I Phone 4 (bought in the US with verizon plan) is locked so can't use it for calls here in China.

Back to original post, looks like best to buy a cellphone in HK next month.

^ you can also get your iPhone unlocked at pretty much any phone store, and then it will work in china as well as back in the US (or Europe, or Australia, or... anywhere basically). If you negotiate that along with the purchase of a new phone, youll probably get a discount.

If you want to use 4G LTE, the iPhones have more LTE bands than most other brands. If not, most quad band GSM phones will do. US only has 2 GSM providers: AT&T and T-Mobile, both use LTE Bands 2 and 4. Most of Asia and Europe use LTE Bands 1, 3, 7. Many "global" roaming cell phones may still not work in the US. It's often easier to purchase electronics from the two reputable chains in Hong Kong: Broadway and Fortress. Fortress HK has an English website with products and prices available. You might want to check it first to see their product availability and prices.
