Living in China for a few years, I've tried to avoid American Fast food here. Local rice, noodles, and other specialties are definitely cheaper and often better. Frankly the Pizza Hut pizza here(pig knuckle and pineapple pizza) and McDonalds (local beef) are pretty awful.

Just wondering if American fast food chains are any better in other places such as Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore?

In China, I always enjoyed going to McDonalds only for the egg McMuffin in the morning.

I looked at a pizza hut menu in Macau, and it was similar to the Chinese offerings. I don't eat meat so I don't go McDonald's often, but having been to them with friends in HK, they seem similar as well.

I am surprised the Mcds is not the same - it is the same in Malaysia, Singapore, HK, even Kunming when I was there. I have been to the following and found them almost identical to the US:

Chili's
Fridays - Aussie beef but good burgers and wings
Applebees - good burgers and ribs - Aussie meat
Pizza Hut - in UAE it's the same but in Singapore it was not good.
PF Changs - same as US (I have never seen one in Asia but they are in the ME)
Cheesecake Factory - Deserts seem the same
KFC - tastes the same (not necessarily a compliment)
Burger King - I don't know because I don't eat there.

Personally, I don't love Aussie meat but it is fine for burgers.

I thought McDonalds in China were unique, particularly with some of the dessert menu items. I especially liked trying the pineapple and tapioca pies. I felt the same way about KFC, with the cucumber and plum sauce chicken wraps, etc.

Yeah, I don't think PF Chang's would go very far in Asia. Same reason that Red Lobster doesn't go very far in New England and there's no Olive Garden in Italy.

Pizza Hut is 100% different here, but Papa Johns is almost exactly the same, other than the size of the pizza, and none of their garlic sauce when I went. Funny how both are "upscale" here.

In Singapore Pizza Hut was close to $50 SGD with tip - it is less than half that here in the Middle East. Papa John's tastes the same here also. There is very little Chinese food in the UAE so I find myself going to PF Chang's

Papa John's pizza is China is surprisingly okay. Just don't get thin crust pizza as it's like a thin tortilla with catsup! KFC is ubiquitous here in China but not very tasty - we are cooking a lot in our place to get the Western food we want.

I had Papa Johns and McDonalds on rare occasions during my 2 stints in China and both were okay (meaning compatible to what is available outside of China).
