I do know that Russia was prolific at producing classical musicians at one point (I wonder whether it still does today)... And it is a major hockey country.

However I always hear jokes about Moscow being the hub of Russian dairy farming, and being the world capital of dairy farming.

Off the top of my head:
Architectural wonders(St Basil's Cathedral, Peterhof, Winter Palace, Catherine Palace, Kazan Cathedral etc.)
Literary icons(Tchekov, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Sholokohv etc.)
Classical music
Ballet(basically an artistic powerhouse)
Fierce models
One of the strongest nations on sports, very often excels in the Olympics and crap
Astounding level of corruption
Stalinism and the disaster it brought upon the world
A dangerous neighbor and a horrifying bully(mostly to Europe, not so much to Asia - that bullying role is filled in by China here) that never admits

That's pretty much it.

I don't think Putin is underestimated in the US at all. There is a lot of trepidation about the guy in the west. I think Putin is underestimated by Russians. It's never good to have one person with all that power, it seems to me.

If I had one question for Russians it would be what makes them lean toward authoritarian styles of government?

I enjoyed War and Peace like few other novels I've ever read. A second question might be, how accurate is the portrayal of the Russian psyche that Tolstoy puts forth?
