Older folks and anyone with knowledge of history at all resent or even hate Japan (the politicians mainly, not the general population) on some level, especially in countries that Japan occupied (obviously). I think that many SE Asians would prefer to do business with China over Japan, if given a choice.
Korean pop music (which is largely derived stylistically from Japanese pop) is likely more popular than Jpop now. Korean cosmetics are thought of as the best in Asia, and Korean dramas are more popular than any live action Japanese TV.

Japanese animation, comics, games, cars, and food outpace their Korean competition.

five to ten years ago, I think that plenty of Asian nations would have been happy to do business with China first, but recent territorial disputes have sullied that to a degree. People are a lot more likely to be inflamed by current events than ones that happened three generations ago; the Japanese are viewed as much more benign than the Chinese.

Oh, yes, I can speak Mandarin Chinese, in fact, in my ex-job, i was usually designated by my colleagues to liase and speak with clients from mainland China or from overseas Chinese diaspora, as i was better at verbal Chinese than most of my colleagues, but my writing skills will fail.

But not dialect; I only know swear words from NS but little else. There are some in my generation whom can't speak even a single word of dialect.

that question would not be even asked if only the Chinese played their cards well. you know you are already the biggest in the neighborhood, you don't need to push your weight around.

claiming everything within your sight is not good. what do the other littoral states would do? of course they would gravitate to other friendly neighbor.

Japanese modern culture gets a bad reputation for wicked pornography and child pornography. They are illegal in most other Asian countries including Korea ,China and SE Asia.

Japanese men appear as nerdy, sex-maniac, short, bad looking, physically and mentally weak compared with South Korean men in the eyes of other Asians. South Korean men benefit from compulsory conscription and banning pornography.

The only good part about Japan compared with China for the Southeast Asians is Japan do not cliam the South China Sea Islands, and provide aid to the poorer countries of SE Asia.

In China at least, I've never heard of negative stereotypes about Japanese guys being nerdy, short, sex-crazed, etc etc etc... I just hear about them being "Japanese" which is a big negative because of WW2. The stereotypes seem to err more on the side of being bloodthirsty than anything else.

Porn may be illegal in some SEA countries, but it's sure not hard to get ahold of it thanks to the internet. Because of this, most Chinese guys I know think that Japanese girls are "very cute" and "very sexy," history be damned. Maybe their grandma would disapprove but they'd be A-OK with it.

Ironically, Japanese girls would probably lob a lot of the stereotypes you listed about Japanese guys right back at them

Yes, China did in fact influence Vietnam, especially northern Vietnam. But, let's be clear, the influence was largely forced on the Vietnamese and the Vietnamese resented the same faught many times over a thousand years to rid Vietnam of the Chinese.

The last time the Vietnamese kicked the Chinese out was 1979.

During the Vietnam War, the Chinese often refused to allow the Soviet Union to fly through Chinese airspace to supply aid to the NVA.
