The explosion in Tianjin was tragic and predictable....because this is how China works, unfortunately.
It seems that official corruption has been with Chinese civilization since its inception.....nothing really surprising here. I guess this is why rich Chinese people who can leave China, leave en masse.
In many important ways, China is still just a gigantic third world country struggling to find a way to stay afloat in its own pool of crap....So much for the "China Threat" to others because China is its own biggest threat!
As an outsider, one persistent trait I've observed of the Chinese is their capacity to inflict harm on each other.. It seems like throughout their history, they can never actually be 'truly' united and at peace among themselves.. There are a lot of good decent Chinese out there with the potential to help bring about a shifting world paradigm for the good of the whole world.. But always, they are under the umbrella of the corrupt elitists who seek power and control at all costs..
China is a developing nation; there's no other way to describe them, and anyone who tries to describe it as otherwise has no idea what they are talking about, or is trying to spin things.
You can bribe your way into and out of probably 90% of things in China if you have the money, which means that wealthy people can do more or less whatever they want. This ranges from the obnoxiously obvious but ultimately innocuous (major Chinese cities now require you to enter a lottery to get a license plate for your car, but you can circumvent this by making a 35,000 RMB "donation" to the CCP, which is, irony upon ironies, super-classist as now rich people can have their collection of Lamborghinis and Maseratis, while a guy who needs a van to become a courier and make 4k per month could statistically wait two years), to the glaring and maddening (wealthy and politically-connected murderers and rapists given "suspended death penalties" which mean that their punishment is more or less deferred in practice, and hiring a person to stand in their place in prison for that deferred sentence so they are actually able to be free, in effect totally escaping punishment).
The guys that owned and managed this company most likely gave red envelopes and/or nice cigarettes, big parties, etc to the guys that were supposed to inspect and enforce the limit on how much was supposed to be stored at the warehouse... giving the inspectors the benefit of the doubt, the owners knowingly hid or mislabeled the chemicals, but equally likely is that the guys who were supposed to go do inspections simply didn't go. They figured that there would never be a big accident, so why worry? Now, most likely, some of them will be sentenced to death, and the case is too high profile for all of them to escape.
Let's not forget that the U.S. was a 3rd world country for many, many years & decades, and we were a cesspool of pollution and corruption!
Take Pittsburgh! At one time, you couldn't even open the windows to your house, as black soot would invade every corner of your house!
In Cleveland, the rivers were so polluted, they'd even catch on fire!
In NYC, the water was so unsafe to drink, you had no choice but to drinking fermented beverages!
China will clean up its act one day, just like the U.S., but perhaps quicker than we did!

The "Ma Ma Hu Hu" culture and the greed of the Chinese have got to go....
They'll probably put some plant mangers and underlings on one of their famous show trails, find them guilty and have the lot executed. It'll be all over the media. When it's all over all the corruption begins anew. Money speaks louder than the fear of prosecution.

Let me ask when, when the UK experienced the worst air pollution bad enough to kill cows, how much was their GDP per capita? The surprising answer is more or less the same as China today (inflation adjusted).
People attack China for lack of democracy, but how many years western countries adopted democracy? Spain and Portugal in the 1970s. The US in the 1965, almost 200 years after the country was established.
Yeah, but, the US is just over 200 years old. The Chinese have had 5000 years to get their act together.
