I think either Nha Trang or Da Nang should be your best bet. Honestly I always wanted to go to some destinations in the north at least once before moving to America, but my mom never let me do it (I was born and raised in HCM)

Nha Trang would be awesome if you like going to the beach. I love the food and stuff in Da Nang; considering Hoi An and Hue are pretty nearby. Otherwise, I heard Sapa and Phong Nha caves are very beautiful.

I visited Vietnam on a cruise last February.

We spent two days in HCMC (Saigon) and I loved the place. Fantastic vibe and lots to do and see.

We stopped in Da Nang and took a tour up to Hue. I thought Hue was great and would like to spend more time there. I felt that we just skimmed the surface. Unfortunately, we did not get to see Da Nang but I particularly enjoyed the ride up Rte. 1.

We also stopped at Ha Long Bay which was amazing. Again, that is worth more time than we gave it.

We definitely intend going back but for a land based vacation next time. The Mekong Delta, Hoi An and Hanoi will be high on the list.

Not in order but.
- Hanoi : A must visit, old, incredibly charming, cuisine, arts & histories, French architecture, lakes and parks. Best time to visit is autumn to winter.
- Hue: imperial architectures and cuisine, absolutely worths a visit.
- Sapa: beautiful landscapes for adventurous travellers.
- Ha Long: Really amazing, I personally won tickets for a 2-nights cruise trip on a lucky draw.
- DaNang-Hoi An: Nice beaches and resorts. Hoi An is a very cool ancient town, lots of handmade souvenirs shop and restaurants.
- Nha Trang: Beautiful beaches and fresh seafood, it's in the South so you can find more exotic tropical fruits there.

You know she is Vietnamese when she calls it Saigon...no one really calls it Ho Chi Minh City that lives there.

Oh she'd hiss like a very upset kitty if I called her Saigon that. She was born there so that's what its always going to be called forever.

I'd say Saigon is a good place to live since it's affordable, better paying jobs and good entertainments and shoppings. Otherwise it's very overcrowded, polluted and higher crime rates, not the best place to visit unless you are into big cities "fun".
