Is China the only country where if you get a 3 day holiday, you have a 6 day work week ahead. All national schools (including one where I work) were back Sunday. I believe the Chinese school year is 200 days. How does that compare to other asian countries? We do have golden week next month but I'm sure the days taken off will be "made up" on other days.

I wonder how they make up the Chinese New Year holiday, since it lasts a whole week. I one bought something online from China in February and got an automated e-mail that shipping would be delayed a week due to the holidays. They also have one other 7-day and several 3 day holidays.

Usually during these long holidays in China, the company will ask employees to come in to work the weekend before or after (or both) the holiday. A official government schedule is sent out, but companies have the right to schedule the holidays however they want as long as it meets the minimum days off. October holiday is coming at that's from Oct 1st thru 3rd. There is also a 3 day holiday first week in May, along with the big one, the Chinese New Years holiday which is early February this year.

FYI, it's nearly impossible to get train reservations during Golden Week. We are going from Tianjin to Dalian then Beijing. And the only way to go is fly. Fortunately the air fares aren't too outrageous (around $100) but Golden Week fares from Beijing to HK are $800 vs. $200 for the rest of year (depending on timings)

Flights in and out of Hong Kong are always more expensive as they're considered "international" flights. Try booking to Shenzhen and walking over the border. Cheaper but not very convenient.

Booking to Shenzhen is right but walking over the border (using a bus to do) is very time consuming during Chinese holiday periods. It is better to pay the extra amount take a shared taxi van from Shenzhen Airport to Hong Kong Airport and back.
