I haven't seen my cousins in 17 years. My 4 year old and I will be going to Taiwan to see them. I know it is customary to buy gifts but I am not sure what to buy. We are all in our 30s. My girl cousin has 2 school-age kids. My guy cousin is unmarried. Any advice on what to buy from the U.S.A.? I thought maybe there is a common gift people bring to Taiwan to give relatives? I'm very nervous about meeting them. We are staying at the guy cousin's place for a week so I wanted to get him something nice. There's a language barrier between us so I'm not getting much info from him with my broken Chinese! Any help would be appreciated, THANK YOU!!

Also, if there's any cool place to take a 4 year old, please share. I believe we will be living in the New Taipei City area.

See's candy?

When I go to Japan I bring lots of See's candy, baklava and the cool In & Out Burger t-shirts. My guy friends love those t-shirts cause of the old American cars with the old style drive-in scenes. I'd think the same would go with Taiwan.

Moderator cut: deleted quote to vitamins and supplements. I live in the US as well as my parents. But everytime my parents go back to Taiwan they always bring vitamins for my relatives (as my relatives request these for some reason). See's Candies also seems to be popular. While whenever I have friends or relatives visiting from Taiwan or coming back from Taiwan, I always ask they bring back pineapple cakes from Taiwan.

I always request pineapple cake, too! My brother used to always ask for taiyangbing - sun pastry(?).

I'm a little weary of bringing vitamins/supps. Is there something specific the Taiwanese like or are you going under the assumption that I should mention it to them and see what vitamins they ask for specifically?

Do that.

So they will expect vitamins. I'd still bring them an unexpected treat, maybe like See's candy and/or baklava, etc.
