Why? Singapore wants to be a hub for everything and likely forked out good $ for the visibility.
Neutral locations are always preferred. Otherwise one side will be seen and will in fact have advantange of everything from photo-ops to anything of substance.
With Ma is stepping down, this is all risk and little reward for most Taiwanese. But for the 大陸人 , they may be trying to secure their future. The ret of Taiwan should be nervous.
Why can't they hold the meeting in either Beijing or Taiwan?
The last time a high-ranking PRC envoy went to Taiwan, he had rotten eggs thrown at him, hitting his face and clothes.
Any Taiwan leader travelling to any part of China is committing political suicide; it would be seen by the rest of Taiwan as paying respects to Beijing.
Hence a neutral location - nobody is going to throw eggs in Singapore.
What will the meeting achieve and why in Singapore ?
Why can't they hold the meeting in either Beijing or Taiwan?
Ma is stepping down soon, the meeting won't hold much impact actually
A lot of PRC money is in Singapore and they wanted to drop by the banks to look at it
No the meeting had to be in a neutral location so why not Singapore? I agree nothing substantive will come from meeting but shouldn't Taiwan strive for good relations with China if for no other reason is that will be safer direction?
There is no way in hell anyone will back Taiwan independence, the US could have done it 50 years ago and they still haven't.
50 years ago the US backed ROC, for them an independent Taiwan or a fake China didn't really make much of a difference.
And funny that you said "Han people should get along" when in reality, China is exactly the reason why that is not the case. You know, with all the threatening and annoying wumao and ****.
