About 2 years ago i met a Vietnamese working girl in the nightlife of Bangkok, I asked her where she was from and she replied with Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. I replied with "Saigon?" At this point she looks at me like i just said something really bad and she changed the subject right after.
I wanted to ask more about the city name but didn't want to kill the mood.

Same here, mind you that they are all currently living in Florida. (there might be a reason for that)

They might get their heads chop off if they call them Saigon.

And about half the signs in HCMC say Saigon.

There's a "Saigon Export" local beer, a Saigon tower, Saigon this...Saigon that.

Maybe the girl was just weird.

A lot of people in Saigon are afraid of being arrested for the horrible crime of loving their home.

Think of the name "Ho Chi Minh City" this way. How would most Americans feel if Germany won World War II, took over America, and renamed the capital "Hitlerville" after their war criminal leader/butcher? That's more or less exactly what happened in Saigon, and it happened less than a generation after they finally got out from under the thumb of the French imperials.

Most people in my family would be unhappy with you if you called it Ho Chi Minh City.

I think it depends on who you talk to.
There was a janitor in my department when I was in graduate school. He was from Vietnam and he hates communism (he said that to me). Of course he prefers the name Saigon.

But if you ask some young girl from Hanoi, she probably won't care or prefers Ho Chi Minh.

It also bothers me when people say "I am going to Ho chi Minn Saigon" Just call it the current single name. That is enough.

Someone I met in Dallas said that and I gave them a dirty look lol
