I believe Beijing is rather close to the Gobi Desert, so if the wind picks up, there's dust/dirt/sand being blown into Beijing as well.

I know! I live in Las Vegas, surrounded by desert, and when the winds pick up here, sometimes gusting to 50-60MPH, I need a brush to wipe off all that fine sediment from the my car. Imagine it going into your lungs!!!

I am always wearing a disposable mask when I go out in any city in the USA too. I think I will be among those less likely to suffer from health complications if I just completely cover up from the exposure to this.
