What about your job? Can you take long vacations, or do you get a new one when you go home?

I guess it's fun if your young - these backpacker destinations are kind of seedy and attract young Europeans and Australians, some Americans - they really do stay for months at a time. Cheap food, cheap booze, cheap rooms if you can stand cockroaches and other Spartan elements. Lay on the beach, get drunk at night, vomit on the beach, sleep in and repeat. Cultural and historic interest is not an elment to this travel, if you want to call it travel. Exploitive to the locals since it seems that expats (mostly older Europeans) are buying out these bars and lodges and shutting out local owners. Crime is high - assault, burglaries, prostitution.
They are popping up in Vietnam and even Cambodia now. Staying for more than a week is actually my idea of hell.

It's not hard to get away from all the so-called "problems." If you can walk four or five blocks, you're all set. As for who is being exploited? I can tell you it isn't the locals. Foreigners can't own real estate, at least in Thailand, so foreigners who want to open bars, restaurants and guesthouses have to lease the property from a local owner, usually at an exorbitant rate. They do that for a while, go broke, and then some other fool comes along and tries the same thing. The turnover rate of those types of businesses is phenomenal.

And I never saw anyone vomit on the beach.

Nothing better than asking a friend or family how to pronounce "Phuket". I'm so juvenile.

Some Thai girl was giving me a hard time one day because I was supposedly pronouncing Phuket wrong. I thought it was "Poo ket," but she waned to pronounce it "Poo get." I guess people will know what you're talking about one way or the other.

They were also laughing at me about how I pronounced Koh Chang.

I could tell you stories. Sometimes, it's best just to keep your mouth shut.
