This has been a series of bad moves on China's part for something that's fairly unnecessary. It's all around just an incredibly incompetent thing for the Chinese government to be agitating for control over an already open sea lane. The drive of that entire article completely misses the forest for the trees. China is simply acting on bad faith and bad policy here--what is the point of pissing off your neighbors for no particular gain and a lot of net overall loss?

And if you look closer, you'd see that the Chinese may claim the whole SCS, but they have not forcibly ejected anyone from the islands that they claim are theirs. The vietnamese occupy the most of those SCS islands by far, but the Chinese have not touched them at all. In fact the Chinese don't even dare touch the filipino contingent on Huang Yen island. This is in the context of the Chinese South Sea Fleet having more firepower and total tonnage than all of the ASEAN navies put together and they still act like a bunch of cowards. Like I said before, I don't understand why all of you folks are worrying about the Chinese. They may talk loud, but it's all bluster. I bet even if the japanese sail pass those islands, the PLA wont dare do anything. It's all for show to fool the Chinese people into thinking that the current leadership is making China "strong", when , in fact, the US insults China more than it insults anybody in the world.

Think about it. China has nukes and is supposedly a major power, yet the US literally tramples on Chinese sovereignty right on China's coastal doorstep. The Paracel is so close to China's Hainan island. The US would never do this to Russia, but it can do this to the Chinese because the Chinese leaders don't have the b%lls like Putin. Once those islands are fully developed, what can China do with it? Stationing planes and ships there, but when the military does not even dare touch a hair on the filipinos, isn't it just a waste of Chinese people's money? China has not extended its control over anything. The Japanese will come, and even the Australians will sail pass these islands just for fun. I wouldn't worry about the Chinese.
so? What are you going to do about it? If you like the PRC so much, go live there. Why don't you go protest on the street if you're so concerned about PRC sovereignty instead of complaining on a message board?

Do you think this would happen anywhere near the US? It's almost as if the Chinese are afraid or something...even in protecting their island that is NOT in dispute (not part of the SCS). It's almost embarrassing how weak China is in the face of the US, and we're worrying about the Chinese? Give me a break.

The Chinese leadership is just building up the Chinese navy for show and display, and to make their people feel like the leadership is making China strong. In reality, they are actually so afraid of taking any initiative that they are literally frozen and unable to take any action. We don't have much to worry about China because the Chinese leaders have their hands full just to rule China. Pathetic country and you all are so worried about a "bully". They are scared of their own people.
People of US worried about China? There is some irony here - you started the thread and now you are complaining that people are commenting on the thread? Take your medicine, or don't start a thread.

Otherwise, this is an election year, in all the issues the US has both foreign and domestic - ISIS and terrorism, immigration, economy, Obamacare, gun control, Ukraine, North Korea, and so on, the situation in the South China Sea ranks pretty low. It appears that your impression is that the US is worried about China each and every moment of the day. Having coworkers in China and traveling there often, I worry about my projects and initiatives that have to do with that market - it has absolutely nothing to do with relations between US and China. None of us can care less, but if you ask our opinion we will give it to you...

I'm trying to figure out how we went from extolling the virtues of China's throbbing military apparatus, to lamenting how pathetic and weak it is...

Italy should reclaim all of North Africa, the Middle East. Spain, Croatia, France, Germany, and a whole bunch of other lands too based on some ancient historical Roman Empire maps that proves those territories belong to Italy.

Yeah, OK , whatever you say about the SCS being to yours.

Should China withdraw from the United Nations ?

China will not go to a Unitrd Nations hearing regarding the South China Seas island reclaiming & ownership. The United Nations Charters for the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS) require an island to be above the high tide water line. A 12 mile economic zone around the shoreline is provided to those nations, which China has met.
Is there a need to have a UN assembaly to ammend UNCLOS for the global warming higher oceans beach reclaimation or stop China from inhabiting the new landmasses?

Yesterday, CNN was quoted "Taiwan: Chinese missles on island". Today the BBC has quoted "US concern at China missle reports". The testing of rights of passage was not preformed by the United states until late last year when the USS Lassen & this year a USAF B-52 Long Range Strike Bomber flew over the UN disputed islands.
