I thought Sunday was the NYE of Lunar New Year.

Anyway, may the dead rest in peace and the affected recover as soon as possible.

This news reminds me of 921 earthquake:
The 921 earthquake (Chinese: 九二一大地震; pinyin: Jiǔ'èryī dàdìzhèn), also known as Jiji earthquake (Chinese: 集集大地震; pinyin: Jíjí dàdìzhèn), was a 7.3 Ms or 7.6-7.7 Mw earthquake which occurred in Jiji (Chichi, 集集), Nantou County, Taiwan on Tuesday, 21 September 1999 at 01:47:12.6 TST (Monday, 20 September 1999 at 17:47:12.6 UTC). 2,415 people were killed, 11,305 injured, and NT$300 billion (US$10 billion) worth of damage was done. It was the second-deadliest quake in recorded history in Taiwan, after the 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung earthquake.
I pray for Taiwan.

Yes, Sunday is Lunar New Year Eve and Monday is Lunar New Year, but I keep hearing people wishing each other Happy Lunar New Year all this week. But, the earthquake hit in Taiwan when many were in Lunar New Year mode.

I agree this earthquake reminds me of the September 21, 1999 one. In that earthquake, I had a friend who lost both of his grandparents- their building collapsed- largely due to shoddy construction. I heard some buildings in Tainan collapsed, sadly.

This earthquake is nowhere near the magnitude of 921. Not even close. Several buildings in Tainan collapsed last night, but back on 921 it was thousands all over the country.

Anyways I hope the rescue process will be smooth and the recovery will be soon.

Agreed. The 921 earthquake was 7.6 and around 2,300 died. However, we will have to say the Tainan earthquake is the most deadly earthquake in Taiwan since the 921 earthquake.

Yeah no doubt about that. It's awful.

It's also worth noting that the tectonic plates of Japan and Taiwan are linked. Whenever a huge earthquake happens in Japan, 5 years later a huge one will strike Taiwan. Kobe earthquake killed more than 5000 in January 1995, and in September 1999 Taiwan had the infamous 921 earthquake, killing more than 2000; Tohoku earthquake happened in March 2011, then this Tainan earthquake happened almost exactly 5 years later.

That's one disturbing Dangerous Liaison.

Wow! That's very interesting.

One thing I noticed about the last major quake in Taiwan was that it was in a mountainous area, and affected mainly the aboriginal population. I'm wondering what the case is with the current situation. Were there aborigine villages in the affected area? Just curious.
