I'm planning a trip to Japan that may also include a stop in Taiwan (or Hong Kong). This is my first trip there. I will be there for only a couple of weeks at the most so I won't be able to fit in as much of Asia as I would like to and will plan later trips. I was initially going to do Tokyo and Osaka (still considering it), and Taipei is just a short flight from Japan.
For those who have visited or lived in Taiwan, what's good to see and do other than the night markets? Any suggestions? What would be a good amount of time to spend there?
Also trying to decide what is good to see and do in Tokyo and Taipei as a foreigner as far as nightlife I know some places don't serve foreigners in Japan. I've read to avoid Roppongi. I will most likely be traveling alone.
Hmmm I'm the type of locals that almost never go out lol. I've never even been up to Taipei 101 or the Elephant Mountain and I don't think I've ever been to National Palace Museum or CKS memorial hall either lol. I'm really not the best person to ask for itinerary.
Do you use Reddit? The travel subreddit has lots of information of Taiwan, I was quite surprised by the amount of redditors who've been there. Taiwan was the featured 'Destination of the Week' a couple of months ago, I believe the thread is archived now and you can easily read the comments.
The Taiwanese subreddit (r/Taiwan) has plenty of travel advice as well. You might want to check it out as well.
Well, the obvious thing to do is to see the national museum. That alone could take you several days! I've never been into nightlife, so I can't answer your question about that. But be sure to try as many restaurants as you can--the best Chinese food in all of Asia! Try a vegetarian restaurant once or twice, to try the fake meat dishes--they're really quite good! Very interesting cuisine. And for breakfast, get the various meat-filled buns and steamed dumplings from the street vendors. If you're there on a weekend, go to the Hilton Hotel for their buffet brunch. It's incredibly cheap, with several tables full of varied fare, including lots of quality Western baked goods (and other Western breakfast fare). You're allowed to stay as long as you want, so you can go for breakfast, and stay for lunch. You won't believe what a good deal this place is! Superb!
This sounds great! Only thing is, I'm gluten intolerant, so I won't be able to eat much of the food there. That's a tough part of my trip I have to figure out, unfortunately.
I plan to do Air BnB in both countries so that I can have access to a kitchen to be able to cook my own food. A big part of traveling is to be able to experience the local cuisine. I have no idea how I will manage this or be able to socialize without being able to eat most local foods or drink most alcoholic beverages.
The brunch buffet sounds great. Hopefully they will have fresh items that I will be able to eat.
I am all about eating in Taipei lol. They do a lot of buffets well, from hot pot to western. Love beef noodle soup and the dessert shops too. Then of course you have street vendors and night markets.
Of course you can do the historic sites/monuments. One thing I really enjoy is the Maokong Gondola...very cheap (though can be a bit of a wait) way to ride up to the top of the hill and catch amazing views of the city. Taipei 101 is alright...there are a few decently priced and pretty delicious restaurants that give you a way to see the views from up in the tower without paying the fee to go up. Near Taipei there are hot springs, old towns, countryside and more to explore if that's your thing. If you are just sticking to the city, I would think three days is plenty.
Regarding nightlife, I remember the district next to Taipei 101 is popular. A lot of all-you-can-drink type clubs and lots of beautiful ladies. By US standards it is quite cheap too. Assuming you are a straight male, I think Taipei is definitely one of the best places in Asia to spend your time.
