I am taking a Mandarin course and it has a fun little "culture shocker" component that talks about quirky or interesting differences one can find in China. I am reading about how pressure for future son-in-law to own property is very important to obtain blessings of the bride's family and how such pressure has lead to "new coinages of 'Construction' banks for boys (in sh yn hng) and 'Merchants' bank for girls (zhǎo shāng yn hng)". And that's it.. it doesn't explain what these banks are or what they do or how they serve "boys" and "girls" differently. Google isn't helpful in learning more. Anyone know what my book is talking about?

Jianshe means construction. A boy is building things (wealth).
Zhaoshang literally means to attract business. A girl collects money from the "investor".

So it's tongue in cheek?

Yeah, neither is set up to specifically target either gender... More of a reverse/after the fact joke than anything else. No one would look at a girl who banks with China Construction Bank (CCB) as butchy or a guy with a card from Merchants as femmy.
