Surprisingly, it seems the military has taken to the streets forcing Erdogan to flee from the presidential palace. There haven't been clashes or fire shot yet and it seems that it all went smoothly due to a brilliant organization of the coup. The Golpists claim that this is to reinstate the civil liberties that were restricted from the Erdogan government

Here are regular updates from the Guardian. Interesting article about it from Foreign Affairs as well

Indeed. Good thing the UK has left, then.

In all seriousness, we must wait to see how it turns out and see how the normalisation of the country actually works out. There are more issues as well but all of a sudden, it seems more likely

I guess it's not right to open this thread here, as Turkey is not Europe, but Asia.

If so, i prefer the mods move it to the World Forum rather than the ASia one as it's a thing of world relevance

Good.

After the (relatively) healthy reversal in Egypt a few years ago and now this, maybe western country decision-makers will come to their senses, reverse course, and support stability in Syria instead of a chaos which is more brutal now than the former stability.

I know it's a joke but unless Erdogan goes into suicide mode, i doubt things will escalate further than they have
