Yeah, I lived in the Philippine's Manila Quezon City during summer 2014 to summer 2015. I am a Chicago Filipino, too. I have both biked in Chicago and Manila Philippines for transportation and working out. I use biking to save on gas, bypass severe traffic, and to conveniently park by various Malls, whether in Chicago or Manila.
Chicago is a very bikeable and bike friendly city, where many people do use bikes to get to work, or for transportation. It also has a Millenium Center where people who bike to Downtown Chicago to go to work can shower before going to work after a long ride. People can usually lock their bike anywhere, even by Malls.
That is the problem of the Philippines. It is not very bike friendly, and bikes structurally are not a good alternative to solve it's Manila's transportation problems because bike use to solve transportation problems is inhibited!
The Problem in Manila / Quezon City is this:
They do not sell adequate bikes & bike panniers in the Philippines, nor good enough bike racks. The best bikes to use are those that go fast, far, and that are affordable and are rear panniers capable. These should be entry level road, mountain, and hybrid bikes - all that have rear rack capabilities.
The best theft proof U Locks to lock bikes in the Philippines are very rare. I bought an awesome looking 1000 pesos steel encased motorcycle cable lock and yet my bmx bike locked by it got stolen. Si ang!
....
... Well, maybe I should detail these solutions in my bike book, "Biking for Transportation, Weight Loss, and Weight Maintenance, or so..."
