If I recall, correctly, there was a movement to lessen the power of the Chinese before Marcos, and when Marcos came into power, the power/influence of the Chinese accelerated!
I work with plenty of Filipino's in a health care facility, and I hear no love for the Chinese in their country, and they have even pointed out the Llocano Filipino's to me, which are easy to decipher, as they have marked Chinese features, and they hail from the NE part of the country.

Of course there's no love for the ethnic Chinese. No underclass ever love the elite. This is true with the 1% in the US too. The Chinese got there because they are entrepreneurial, like the Jews in Eastern Europe. Of course now they have a powerful China to back up their safety should they need it.
The Philippines is an economic basket case after so many years of American puppet idiots running the country. The US uses them as a doormat to maintain its Asian hegemony while the Filipinos live in fourth world conditions mired in corruption and theft of the national treasury.

The success of the Chinese in the US has nothing to do with how strong China is or isn't, other than the fact that now, there are more rich Chinese people coming to the US as opposed to economic migrants than there were in the past. It's not like the US has laws that prevent the Chinese from being wealthy or successful, or that the US is like Vietnam and the Chinese could do anything meaningful to stop bad things from happening to ethnic Chinese within US borders.

And now the Philippines has a China-supporting, possibly-backed puppet idiot running the country, making a supreme fool of himself as he runs his mouth one day, has his entire government saying soemthing different the next, and then on the third day he says that nothing is changing and didn't mean what he said. To idiots around the globe who admire Putin for being a strongman and China for not being the US, he looks like a hero... to anyone with a brain he's just a doddering buffoon.
Incidentally, Filipinos in the US are the 3rd highest earning ethnicity per capita, and the Chinese are the 19th... after you figure in the Taiwanese, who are #2, meaning that the Chinese are actually lower. Go figure.

Well, indeed the Indians are the first, and that means all the smart Indians have left India. So the Filipinos being third really is a reflection of how bad the Philippines is actually. Nothing to flaunt about. And as in my previous posts, there are plenty of low end idiotic Chinese running around spitting and snotting in public all over the world.....eating dogs effect your intelligence after a while. Of course the success or failure of an ethnic group have nothing to do with the mother country. But it does have a certain correlation to the conditions in that country. Too many factors to think about. But if the Filipinos launch a pogrom against their rich ethnic Chinese neighbors, you can bet that China will do something. The Philippines has no navy worth mentioning and even the Chinese coast guard alone can control the seas around the islands in days.
He sounds like a rational and clear headed guy. He wants dignity and honor for his country, and maybe we Americans just can't deal with that. Arrogance of the Americans even among those who live outside of the US is very telling. Watch him speak in English in Japan.

Yea, all 1.4 billion Chinese are part of the 1% or part of the overclass. The Chinese emigrated to Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia because it was better than staying at home and starving to death.
Until Deng, it was China that was backward, and horribly poor. So now they are prosperous and suddenly it was always that way ? Perhaps you should count the number of party officials who have embezzled money and fled overseas. The Philippines missed out on the Asian economic miracle because of their corruption, cronyism and the colonial system they inherited from the Spanish not the US. The US influence was not overly positive but neither was it as you describe.
I would suggest you read Lee Kuan Yew's book for his intelligent, informed opinion on the subject.
I actually consider this the BEST part of Duterte's government! Being an American minion has done nothing for the Philippines except get us left behind by neighbors who were more willing to play the big nations against one another in varying degrees - look at Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, India, etc! It's high time we steal a page from their playbook and do likewise!

I think it's more the refusal to expand birth control options doing to the massive church presence and the fairly intense levels of corruption. The US is a pretty weird bogeyman because a lot of the Philippines's issues are internal structural issues with domestic policy rather than any external trade or geopolitical policies. Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan have all fared pretty well in comparison, don't you think?

The US has nothing to do with the Philippines problems Duterte and Trump are going to get along anyway. Sometimes when people are poor they just need to find someone or something to blame in the case of the Philippines with certain people that's the US.
The US isn't the country trying to steal your islands and take over the whole South China Sea.
